Lawrence girls basketball snuck past Cony 63-60 Wednesday night to remain unbeaten.
Cony, despite being down for the majority of the game, hung around and even took a fourth-quarter lead at one point, 58-57, over the defending Class A state champions. The Rams found success changing defensive looks, specifically in zone coverage.
A dagger three-pointer from Madalyn Provost was the difference in this one, putting the Bulldogs in front 62-58 with 58 seconds left in the fourth. Morgan Cunningham had a decent look at a game-tying three-point attempt for Cony as time expired but could not convert.
This was the first game we have covered in which the new foul limit rules came into play, with Cony having to commit five fouls in the final two minutes for Lawrence to reach the bonus. CMCC coach Andrew Morong said he was in favor of the new rules, citing the similarities to women’s college basketball.
Provost was named the player of the game with 27 points. Kaylee Elkins added 12 points for Lawrence.
Abby Morrill did all she could for Cony, scoring 27 points of her own. Maci Freeman also scored 14 for the Rams.
