Third Time’s the Charm For Cony to Upset Lawrence in the Region Finals

With just over a minute left Maci Freeman stepped to the line for the Cony Rams with her team up 47-46. Freeman hit the first and missed the second but Cony got the offensive rebound and Morgan Fichthorn went to the line and hit both free throws. Down 50-46, Lawrence turned the ball over on a Maddie Provost travel on the next possession. Kaylee Elkins stole the Cony inbounds but missed the layup and the Rams grabbed the rebound and salted away the Class A North Region Title.

Provost had a rough night for the Bulldogs, finishing with only 12 points, and 8 of them were in the third quarter. The lone Lawrence senior Kaylee Elkins finished with a team high 14 but her and Provost combined for only 2 of the Bulldogs’ 4 points in the final quarter. Lawrence finished with 19 turnovers, 10 in the second half, and despite having a 22-16 halftime rebound advantage, both times finished tied 33-33 on the boards.

The biggest lead either team had was just 4 points until early in the 4th quarter. Cony was led by Cassie Lacroix in the first half, scoring 10 of her 12 points and was the only player in double figures at the break. Fichthorn finished with a game 16 points, scoring 14 after half, and Morgan Cunningham had 14 points, scoring 11 after half. Both Fichthorn and Cunningham combined to go 12-12 from the free throw line in the second half.

Cony led at half time 23-22 despite going just 1-8 from the free throw line. However, in the second half they finished 14-16 and were able to close the game out with the improvement. Lawrence finished 9-13 on the night but just 3-4 in the final half.
